What Older Five Dock Homes Need from a Drain Plumber
Known as the heart of the Inner West's Italian community, this suburb still holds its Ferragosto street festival every summer along the main strip.
That same strip is where a lot of our call-outs start. Delis, bakeries and cafes push fat and food waste into drainage that was sized for houses, not a run of commercial kitchens side by side.
Grease cools and hardens on the pipe wall as it moves away from the sink, narrowing the line bit by bit until a normal load of water can't get through.
Behind that commercial strip sit the suburb's Federation and California Bungalow homes, laid out on the pre-war subdivision, with brick cottages from the 1950s and newer apartment stock filling the gaps since. Most of the older stock still drains through original earthenware pipe.
The two problems compound each other on the streets nearest the strip: brittle joints in old clay pipe, and grease build-up feeding straight into it from the businesses upstream.
A slow drain near the shops is rarely one simple cause. We camera the line to see whether it's fat, a cracked joint, or both, before recommending anything.

Drain Problems We See Around Five Dock
Away from the shopping strip, two things drive most of what's left on the call sheet.
- Shifting ground. Ashfield Shale clay under much of this suburb swells in wet weather and pulls tight in dry spells, and old drainpipes flex with it until a joint finally gives.
- Low-lying stormwater. Pockets near Five Dock Bay and Kings Bay sit low enough that a hard downpour can push more water into the system than the old pits were sized for.
A cracked joint from ground movement is a repair job; a pit that keeps overflowing in a storm is worth a proper look at the stormwater line rather than another clear.

Strata Living Behind the Shopfronts
Not every job on this side of the suburb is a Federation cottage. The apartment stock going up along Garfield Avenue and on the old EnergyAustralia parcel has genuinely changed the housing mix here.
A blockage in a shared building brings its own complication. Several apartments can lose drainage from a single failed stack, so the first job is working out whether the fault sits inside one lot or in the building's shared pipework, before anyone's told what they owe.
We deal with owners corporations and managing agents directly and give the same straight answer to whoever's on the phone, tenant or committee member.

Emergency
A Drain Emergency in Five Dock? We Answer Day or Night
Some blockages can sit overnight without much harm. Others get worse by the hour, and it pays to know the difference.
Ring straight away if any of this is happening:
- A smell coming up through a floor waste indoors
- More than one toilet or sink struggling to empty
- Standing water building up in the yard near a drain point
- The shower or bath filling instead of draining
The Ferragosto crowds and busy summer weekends on Great North Road don't change how fast we pick up. If it's a full sewer backup, that's blocked sewer work rather than a standard clear; one fixture playing up on its own is usually blocked toilets.
What We're Seeing More of in Five Dock's Drains
Grease call-outs used to be almost entirely commercial. That's shifted.
More households are cooking at home more often, and a lot of kitchens weren't set up with that in mind. A sink that copes fine with the odd roast dinner starts to struggle with a heavier weekly routine, and the fat someone assumed would wash away just sits and builds.
We're also seeing more requests to check a line before a kitchen renovation starts, which makes sense given how much of the older housing stock still runs on original pipe. Better to know what's under the floor before the new benchtop goes in than to find out halfway through the job.

Why Five Dock Homes Choose Us for Blocked Drains
A short trip from home turf doesn't mean a rushed job.
Working the City of Canada Bay week in, week out means the grease build-up behind these shopfronts is a familiar problem, not a surprise, and we know the older houses further back just as well.
That kind of repetition pays off for the customer. It means fewer wrong guesses and a diagnosis that's right the first time round.

Drain Services We Bring to Five Dock
Given the mix of commercial grease and older clay pipe here, camera work leads every job.
CCTV drain inspection puts a camera down the line and settles the guesswork.
Blocked drain repair handles the century-old earthenware once a section has actually failed.
Drain cleaning clears grease and debris without digging anything up.
Blocked sewer covers a full backup once a blockage has taken proper hold.
Blocked stormwater handles the low-lying pockets when a storm overwhelms the pits.
Blocked toilets sorts a single fixture without the wait for a full callout.

How We Fix a Blocked Drain for Good
A camera run comes first on every job, grease-fed or not. It shows us exactly what's in the pipe before a decision gets made.
- See it. The footage settles what we're actually dealing with, no guesswork.
- Shift it. High-pressure jetting for grease and debris, the electric eel for roots and solid blockages.
- Mend what's broken. A section that's actually failed gets repaired or relined, priced before we touch it.
- Back it up. A lifetime labour warranty covers the fix once we've confirmed it holds.

Good questions, straight answers
Blocked Drain FAQs
Straight answers to what locals ask us most.
Do you actually service Five Dock?
We do, every week, including the shops and cafes along the main strip. It's part of the same round as Drummoyne, not a suburb we visit occasionally.
How local are you, really?
We're working somewhere on this peninsula most days of the week. It's a normal part of the round, nothing that needs planning around.
Can you clear a blocked drain on a weekend?
Yes. Saturday, Sunday, public holiday, it makes no difference to when the phone gets answered.
Are you licensed and insured for drain work?
Both trades, one team: Lic #292427C covers water and gas together, no second tradesman required for a mixed job.
How does your pricing work for drain jobs?
We look, then we quote, then we start, in that order. Best price guaranteed means the figure you agree to is the figure you pay.
What's the actual cost to clear a blocked drain?
Depends on what's actually wrong, which is why we camera first rather than quote blind. First-time customers get $65 off whatever the job turns out to be.
